Contact forces are forces that occur when any two object physically come into contact with each other. A good example is friction. Friction occurs when two objects move against each other, and for friction to occur, there must be contact.

Contact forces are described in Newtons Laws of Motion. In the 3rd law (briefly, 'Every action has an equal and opposite reaction'). For example, if we were to throw a ball, the equal and opposite reaction would be the ball flying through the air. The force demonstrated would be 'Applied Force'.
